Dr. Shirley Freeman Receives Champion of Service Award from Volunteer Florida

Dr. Shirley Freeman was honored recently with a “Champion of Service” Award from Volunteer Florida, the state’s lead agency for volunteerism and national service. Dr. Freeman was recognized for her “lifetime achievement” in volunteerism. The Champion of Service Award is given by the state to honor individuals for “strengthening our state with significant and meaningful service.”

Dr. Freeman is one of the founders of the Community Foundation and a current board advisor.

Chester Spellman, CEO of Volunteer Florida, presented the award January 19th in a ceremony at the Key West Garden Club at West Martello Tower. Sheriff Rick Ramsay also spoke of Dr. Freeman’s significant service to Monroe County, along with Patrick Garvey, CEO of Growing Hope Initiative, the nominator of the award.

The Champion of Service Award was established in 2013 by Volunteer Florida to honor individuals and groups for their outstanding efforts in volunteerism and service.
